HISTORY AND CULTURE

Hyderabad, the capital of Southern Indian states Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (previously undivided), occupying 650 sq kilometers and situated on the bank of the Musi river, is the fourth most populous city of India. Theories explaining the origins and etymology behind Hyderabad's name differ. There is myth that after founding the city, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah fell in love with and married a local nautch girl known as Bhagmathi or Bhagyavathi, and named the city Bhagyanagaram.

Hyderabad, also referred to as the City of Pearls is the most populous urban agglomeration in India.

    TRAVEL TIPS

    • March can be extremely hot. Drink a lot of water to save yourself from heat stroke.

    • Given the traffic, driving here can be a bit of challenge. It is always better to opt for a public/private transport.

    • Beware of the branded thing you buy from the roadside stall, the may have been manufactured in their backyard – not everything you are offered is genuine.

    • Put on a insect repellant all day and all night without a miss.

    • Always keep some hard cash because some of the local restaurants do not accept cards.

    • Always carry your passport with you. Put a sticky note inside with the local telephone number of your Consulate.

    • When in city - make sure you visit the best of the restaurants offering local cuisine so that you don’t have to miss on the famous Hyderabadi biryani and kebabs.

    • Always make note of the local numbers just in case of emergency, like 100 for police and 102 for ambulance. The STD city code for Andhra Pradesh- Hyderabad is 040.
